Opening Sequence Analysis - conclusion

Having looked at 5 opening sequences for films from different genres I have noticed that the following conventions frequently appear.

  • important characters are introduced as well as their character traits which maybe important in the rest of the narrative. Usually the character is the main protagonist but sometimes it might be another important character or the antagonist
  • the film's genre is established for the audience through recognisable iconography such as costumes, make up and props
  • important locations and settings are introduced indicating to the audience where the action of the film will take place

  • the style of the film is established

  • the use of production company logos

  • the inclusion of titles

  • setting up an enigma

  • introducing the plot/storyline
