Opening Sequences - Introducing enigma/mystery - introduction

One final convention of opening sequences I want to look at in more detail is the way that enigma or mystery is created for the audience. This often happens in certain types of genres such as thriller and horror films, and is used to grip and engage the audience, encouraging them to watch on.

Opening sequences must hook the audience's attention, and I have chosen to analyse the opening sequences of three films which do this - The Usual Suspects, Goodfellas and The Bourne Identity.
