Opening Sequence Analysis - Introduction

For my first piece of research I am going to look at 5 opening sequences from different genres. By doing this I hope to establish some of the conventions that are in opening sequences in films, to give me a better understanding of the purpose of opening sequences. 

I have purposely chosen films from different genres as I want to see how opening sequences work regardless of the genre the film belongs to. 

I have chosen to look at the opening sequence of Fight Club (thriller), Sherlock Holmes (detective),  Austin Powers: Goldmember (comedy), The Hateful Eight (Western) and IT (horror).
